Theme of Esitys 2/2016 is PLAY

The latest issue of Esitys Magazine is a cooperation with Degree Programme in Dramaturgy in Theatre Academy. Writing the issue was a part of “Borders of a Play” -course led by professor Katariina Numminen, playwright Juha Siltanen and lecturer Tuomas Timonen.

“What is a play and what is not a play”, asks the chief editor Tuomas Timonen in his editorial. “Where are the limits between theatre, score and conceptual art? Or, can one reinvent theatre without reinventing a play?” He goes on to question if a play is still needed in today’s world of theatre but states that the attitude towards plays and playwriting in the issue is mostly positive. And so it is! The issue contains wonderful excerpts of new short plays written by the students, who have also filled the traditional columns of Esitys. Philosopher Miika Luoto examines the vagueness of Aristotle’s Poetics and finds new ways to look at the relationship between text and stage action. Timonen interviews poet Anja Erämaja, who has written her first play and talks about the differences between theatre and poetry.

The cover of Esitys 2/2016 contains a thousand paper cuts with "näytelmä" (a play) written on them.
