Valaskuunnelma Yle Areenassa

Tuottaja: Soila Valkama

The oldest whale of the seas in 2010. Photo by Abdi Hedayat

In 2010  I came across headlines about a fin whale stranded on Vejle fjord in Denmark, and that it was claimed to be the oldest whale found in the world. I was so moved and inspired by this bit of news that I suggested to Radio Theatre at YLE that I’d like to write radio fiction based on this true story. And so I did. It became a story of the fight over the whale bones. Secondly, it’s a “biography” of this 130-140 year old fin whale in nature documentary style and thridly an underwater viewpoint to the devastation of modern progress in the oceans. I directed Valaskuunnelma (The Whale Radio Play) in 2014 and it was proadcasted the same year. Now it’s re-released and you can listen to it from YLE Areena.

When I was collecting material for the script I had the amazing opportunity to see the bones of this fin whale myself in the Danish Museum of Natural History in Copenhagen. I was invited there by Abdi Hedayat, the Associate Curator and Conservator, who was in charge of dissecting the whale and conserving it’s bones. He gave me a fascinating interview concerning the case and the process of conserving. It became the backbone of the whole script.

Find the case also in YouTube and Acuatic Community.
